HAUT-KOENIGSBOURG
Built in the 12th century, the castle bore witness to eight centuries of European conflicts and rivalries between feudal lords, kings and emperors.
The castle was seriously damaged during the 30 years’ war. At the beginning of the 20th century, the German emperor Wilhem II undertook the restauration of the fortress. He created there a museum of the Middle Ages.
As it stands today, Haut-Koenigsbourg well preserved castle offers an extraordinary appearance and insight at what a medieval fortress was like. Towering at almost 800m, especially if you climb the Grand Bastion, you get a panoramic view on the Alsace plain, the Vosges Mountains, the Black Forest, with the Alps as background on a clear sky day !
